    Proxy Understanding

    Not everyone knows the common facts about proxy, here we try enhance it!

    What is a proxy?

    A proxy is an intermediate computer (generally a server or some helpful personal computer) between your computer and the website you want to access (or another remote computer or server). The proxy computer serves as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers.

    What are the uses of a proxy server?

    Proxy server has a lot of purposes including but not limited at:
    • Keep the machine’s address anonymous for security reasons;
    • Log and audit internet access;
    • Bypass firewall restrictions at enterprise or public network;
    • Apply network policy access;
    • Access blocked websites (by your government, ISP or parental control);
    • Speed up internet page content, by caching resources at the proxy server.

    What are the proxy anonymity levels?

    Proxy server anonymaty levels are:
    • Transparent: The remote target server knows your IP address, but it knows that you are connecting via a proxy server. Not useful if you want to hide yourself, but very useful if you need speed;
    • Anonymous: The remote target server do not know your IP address, but it knows that you are connecting via a proxy server. Useful if you want to hide yourself, but some websites do not accept the use of a proxy server;
    • Higly Anonymous: The remote target server do not know your IP address and it do not knows that you are connecting via a proxy server. Useful if you want to hide yourself and access any kind of service.

    How to use proxy?

    Most of web applications (e.i web browsers) can be easily configured to use a proxy, just by editing its settings (proxy section of course) and add the proxy IP, protocol and port. This is the painful way of doing, because every time you want to switch from one proxy to another, you will need to do the same steps.
    There are some softwares that switch automatically the proxy into the machine’s networking configuration from time to time, enabling you to use as many proxy as you wish without the boring task of editing the settings (in the future we will add some more informations about it).
